Myth vs. Record

The myth: a 100 percent casualty rate means everyone in MACV-SOG died.

The record: the figure describes wounds outrunning the number of men. John Plaster, the unit’s veteran-historian, puts recon casualties at over one hundred percent because men were wounded, returned, and were wounded again. In 1968, essentially every recon man on the ground was wounded at least once, and about half were killed (Plaster, via HistoryNet). Not across a career. In one year.
